The revised DIB uses 97 items, grouped into 22 summary statements, to assess functioning in four broad areas: affect, cognition, impulse action patterns, and interpersonal relationships. As a significant extension, Zanarini (1993) has suggested that the borderline personality might best be considered an impulse spectrum disorder rather than a variant of the affective disorder spectrum. The DSM definition of the borderline personality largely represents a synthesis of Kernberg and Gunderson s contributions. The 22 summary statements of the DIB-R are presented in Table 14.1.
